Being a Support Worker is more than just a job—it’s about making meaningful connections, providing care, and improving the lives of others. At GreenTree Community and Inclusion Programs, Support Workers play an essential role in ensuring that individuals with diverse abilities receive the support they need while creating a sense of belonging and independence.

In this blog, we hear from Debbie, a dedicated Support Worker who has been with GreenTree for nearly eight years. She shares her journey, her daily experiences, and why she sees this role as more than just a career—it’s a calling.

Debbie: My name is Debbie, and I’m a Support Worker here at GreenTree. I’ve been here for almost eight years! Originally, I was a Healthcare Aide at a seniors’ facility and worked at GreenTree part-time. Now, I’ve switched it up—I work at GreenTree full-time and part-time as a Healthcare Aide.

A Day In the Life of a Support Worker

Debbie: I really enjoy my role here at GreenTree. It lets me be on the front line, hands-on. Typically, my shift starts at around 2 p.m. If the kids are in school, I go pick them up and bring them home. They get some time to chill in their rooms and relax for a bit—that’s their downtime. I also get their supper going, give them their medications, and make sure they’ve showered at night. It gets busy!

But it’s extremely rewarding work. The people we serve are very unique. They’re special, they have their own personalities, and they need me. They want me in their lives, and I want to be in theirs. GreenTree gives me that opportunity, and it’s a wonderful place to work. To say that this is a fulfilling role is an understatement.

The Qualities of a Great Support Worker

Debbie: The right person for this role needs to be caring, patient, and, most importantly, loving and empathetic. GreenTree is very supportive as a company—they have our backs. If we need help, they hear us. They support us in all aspects, so they’re more than just a team; they’re a family.

I have no worries here. When I need help, my team listens. They always look out for our health and wellness, and that’s crucial because we need that support.

Jesse (speaks to Debbie on having her as part of the team at GreenTree): You make working at GreenTree fun! From day one, it’s been such a pleasure working with you, and I know that you bring so much love and integrity to the table.

You’ve never shied away from telling me how you feel. If you have something to say, you’ll say it—and that is so valuable. We couldn’t do this without you, and I’ve always felt so blessed to call you my friend, my co-worker, and someone to share this journey with.

When people ask me, “What do you need?” I say, “I need more people like Debbie in my life!” You do so much good—not just for us, but for everyone around you. And for yourself, too—I think that’s pretty awesome.

A Career That Fills the Heart

Debbie: Working for GreenTree fills your heart, it really does. Your heart is full, and it’s an amazing feeling.

I’m needed. I’m wanted. I’m heard.

So naturally, it’s a role for a lifetime. I’m definitely here for life.

Debbie’s story is a testament to the impact that Support Workers have—not just on the individuals they assist, but on the entire GreenTree community. It’s a career that requires dedication, empathy, and a true passion for helping others.
