Balancing work and school can be a challenge, but for Jayda, a support worker at GreenTree Community and Inclusion Programs, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. As a student at UBC Okanagan, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Jayda has found that her role at GreenTree not only provides financial stability but also gives her a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

A Home Away from Home

Jayda: My name is Jayda, and I’m a support worker at GreenTree. I’m a student at UBCO here in Kelowna, and I’m working toward my Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology. What I really love about this job is that it doesn’t feel like work. It feels like you’re living your everyday life in a home—it’s cozy and welcoming. The work environment is amazing, and the team here—my co-workers are awesome too.

I particularly look up to them because many are either pursuing or have already completed their master’s in social work. I’ve applied to that program as well, so I’ve asked them a ton of questions whenever I needed help. It’s been great to have such knowledgeable and supportive colleagues.

The Impact of a Supportive Work Environment

Sydnie (Program Manager, GreenTree): (Directed to Jayda) I really appreciate that whenever you’re on shift, I know it’s going to be fun. You’re so good at finding what the kids specifically enjoy doing, what they love, and making sure they’re engaged in a way that works for them. Whether it’s going out in the community or doing activities at home, you ensure that their experience is fulfilling, and I really appreciate that about you.

Jayda: I also really appreciate how you and GreenTree support my schooling and education. You’ve been such a great reference for me.

Sydnie: Of course! I was happy to write a reference, and I only had good things to say.

Hands-On Learning and Skill Development

Jayda: My work experience here has directly benefited from my schooling, and vice versa. I’ve learned so many hands-on skills, like using assistive devices such as standers, AFOs (ankle-foot orthoses), and wheelchairs. I also got to learn about the lift system, which was so cool!

A friend of mine is currently studying occupational therapy, and she just learned about it in school. I was excited to tell her, “I already know that!” The practical experience I’ve gained at GreenTree has been invaluable.

Making Meaningful Connections

Beyond the technical skills, this job has allowed me to create incredible memories. We take the individuals we support on outings to the mall, parks, movie theatres, and even special trips. One weekend, we visited a Christmas Victorian Ranch in Vernon—it was such a fun and unique experience.

The best person for this role is someone who is empathetic and kind because, at the end of the day, you’re caring for a real person. I’m always thinking, Is this place wheelchair accessible? Will they enjoy it? Are there sensory aspects they can engage with? These little considerations make all the difference in creating a positive experience.

A Rewarding and Sustainable Job for Students

Being a student is hard, but working here has allowed me to sustain myself while living in Kelowna in a fulfilling and meaningful way. At the end of the day, I feel accomplished and whole—like I’ve made a real difference in the world.

Jayda’s experience at GreenTree showcases the profound impact that support workers have—not just on the individuals they serve but also on their own personal and professional growth. For students like Jayda, this role offers more than just a paycheck; it provides purpose, valuable skills, and a supportive community.
